Permanent Flux
Published in CD-ROM by (27 September, 1998)
Authors: Laurie Anderson and Paul Garrin
Average review score:

Where did media art come from?
Four artists give their own perspective on the birth of media art. Permanent Flux contains collections of video and experimental film from the 20's that help you explore, and make your own opinion to the origin of media art. I have used this cd in my classes to show my students what a good work of multimedia should look like, and to explore the fields of media, film, and art. Rarely can you find a work of multimedia that works so well. You can navigate in many different ways, making this a useful tool that you won't get bored using. And sometimes its interesting to hear Laurie Anderson tell a tale or two. As it is so hard to find good material to support the history of multimedia art, this work is important to have while there still are copies, as DE balie is a small publishing group.

Personal Medical Information: Security, Engineering, and Ethics: Personal Information Workshop, Cambridge, Uk, June 1996, Proceedings
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (June, 1997)
Author: Ross Anderson
Average review score:

Editor's comments
These are the proceedings of a conference I organized in Cambridge in June 1996, when a debate was raging on whether the British government had the right to collect complete medical records of everyone using the National Health Service, via a number of central databases then under construction. At the conference, we heard how the privacy of electronic medical records is handled in Britain, the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Japan. Shortly after the conference, the Caldicott committee of enquiry was set up to look at the problem and devise medical privacy guidelines for the UK.

The papers presented in this conference are of wider interest, though. Arguments over who should know how much about people's medical history continue in a number of countries, and especially in the USA - where one of the last acts of the Clinton administration was to promulgate medical privacy regulations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The interpretation and implementation of these regulations will be a bone of contention for years to come. This volume documents the views expressed five years ago by some of the main protagonists in the US debate. It also contains useful technical matter on such issues as how to do access control in hospital computer systems and how to manage research databases of de-identified medical records.

I believe that the information contained in this volume will continue to cast light on such problems for many years to come. However much the technology changes, the political and philosophical issues are probably timeless.

Perspectives in Critical Thinking: Essays by Teachers in Theory and Practice (Counterpoints: Studies in the Postmodern Theory of Education)
Published in Paperback by Peter Lang Publishing (04 January, 2000)
Authors: Danny Weil and Holly Kathleen Anderson
Average review score:

The book combines both theory and practice
This book is an excellent resource as to what teachers are doing throughout the United States and why. The book supplies practical discussions in teacher talk for those practitioners looking to understand more about critical theory and the affect of such theory on classroom practice. The authors are from diverse backgrounds, ranging from Native Americans to African-American authors. the book is targeted towards both primary and secondary teaching. I found the book insightful and hopeful in both its approach and content. An excellent addition to critical pedagogy.

An Awesome Tool for Ministry
In this book, David Hesselgrave presents church planting in a practical way. I am so thankful for the influence this book has had even in my own church planting adventure. He discusses the necessary tools that every church planter, and or Ministry worker needs to be:

1. Relevant 2. Possess an anointed message 3. Practical in a world that is continually changing,

I highly recommend this book as a tool for ministry, and a great book for informatory purposes for any library...

The Poinsettia Tradition
Published in Hardcover by Waters Edge Pr (November, 1999)
Author: Christine Anderson
Average review score:

Another lovely book from Christine Anderson
This delightful miniature is a book, a pop-up card, a short history of how poinsettias came to be known in the United States as the December Flower, plus a brief description of how to keep the plants healthy. All of the above is packed into a tiny, jewel-like book, complete with a sewn-in ribbon so that you can hang it on your tree. Or on a gift basket. Or hang the book on a basket of living poinsettias. This book is the one perfect gift I've found.

Her original book, Poinsettias -- Myth & Legend, History & Botanical Fact, was last year's gift of choice. Read both, savor the images, and enjoy your poinsettias -- both living ones and the poinsettias pictured in the books....

The Political Ecology of the Modern Peasant: Calculation and Community
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (April, 1994)
Authors: Les Anderson and Leslie E. Anderson
Average review score:

Political Ecology is an intellectual masterpiece!
Anderson convincingly argues for a new paradigm in the study of Peasant Politics and in the process ably fords the often sterile debate between individualists and communitarians as exemplified by the followers of James Scott and Samuel Popkin. Combining intricate methodology and a broad historical/cultural sweep, Anderson uses the best conceptual tools in the social scientist's kit to arrive at a theory which is both statistically grounded and socially informed. The peasants of this work are more than mere individualists: they are also family men and women, citizens and friends. By placing this nexus, rather than a single aspect of it, at the center of our conceptual focus, Anderson has immeasurably enhanced our understanding of the subtly nuanced lives of peasants as they grapple with primordial forces as well as modern challenges. This book should be required reading for all, regardless of regional specialization, who aspire to a greater understanding of the peasantry. Specialists in development and academics alike will find themselves enlightened by Anderson's approach. While there are a few points, particularly in the methodology appendix where Anderson's formulation of statistical indicators becomes muddy and the overall clarity is momentarily lost, overall the book is cogent and highly relevant

Political Money: Deregulating American Politics, Selected Writings on Campaign Finance Reform (Hoover Institution Press Publication, 459)
Published in Paperback by Hoover Inst Pr (May, 2000)
Author: Annelise Anderson
Average review score:

De-Mystifying Campaign Finance
This book is a marvelous alternative to the common drivel that passes as analysis on the subject of campaign finance reform. Anderson has selected articles that are short and easy to read, yet detailed and informative. Want to know what exactly is meant by "soft money," or "issue ads"? It's here. Want to understand the constitutional restraints on regulation? It's here. Want to understand why reform never works? It's here (hint: and it's not because everyone is corrupt). Anderson includes analysis from a broad cross section of writers, but clearly skews her selections in favor of those usually ignored by the major media - that is, she gives equal time to writers and thinkers who argue that money is not the major problem in American politics. This book, along with FEC Commissioner Bradley Smith's new book, "Unfree Speech: The Folly of Campaign Finance Reform," is reshaping the academic debate over campaign finance reform. Yet it does so through a selection of short, simple essays accessible even to high school students. A very good book on an important policy issue.
